Types of Elections

Primary Election

Held in June of even-numbered years, this election allows members of political parties to nominate candidates for the upcoming General Election.

General Election

Held in November of even-numbered years, voters elect federal and state officers, members of Congress, the General Assembly, county and township officers, and other positions as provided by law. It may also include city, county, or statewide public measures and constitutional amendments.

City Election

Held bi-annually in November of odd-numbered years, City Elections are used to elect the Mayor and City Council Members.

School Election

Held every two years in September, School Elections select school board members for local and nearby districts. Ballots may also include public measure questions related to budgets, levies, or district operations.

Special Election

Any election not regularly scheduled. Special Elections may be called by a taxing authority for a specific purpose as defined by the Code of Iowa.
